BARF
Did you know that the Iranian word for snow is barf? You didn't know that on 5th June 1971 Clydesdale Harriers was second in the 5000 metres team race at Airdrie Highland Game - Phil - 6th, Doug Gemmell - 9th, BMcA - 15th, J Tonner - nowhere. How did I know that? Well I have been sorting through James P Shields's papers. He was not a great runner but a very good club member from the mid 1930's until tha late 1990's when he became ill. He was treasurer and secretary for many, many years, one of Scottish Athletics best officials and administrators and did the club great credit. He worked in Singer's factory and when they opened the factory in India he was sent there - then to Pakistan - then to Iran and when he came back, they demoted him. He went on to work for Barr and Strouds. A super guy in every way.
What prompts the old man saying "They're not so good as they used to be in my young day?" Well, they're not! The club helped organise or organised the Schools International Cross Country Championships, the World Cross Country Championships and the Scottish Veterans Internationals in a spell of four years. Can you see us doing that now? We organised the West Districts and the Dunbartonshire Cross Country Championships all through the 60's 70's and 80's. Now we don't organise any cc event. Why don't we? Lack of admin ability? No way. Peter, Jim, Phil, Yvonne, John and company are all easily capable of organising a championship using officials from outwith the club. Lack of will? Probably. Holding even tha County Relays or Championships would be a start. How can we do it next year? Don't say "We can't because....................." it is always easy to find reasons why not; the REAL question is "How can we organise the County Championships?" After all it is always easier to run on your own home trail. Why should Clydesdale always be the ones to travel? How can we do it at home?

Track League Update
Some more results from Sunday's League Match at Meadowbank. Anthony's javelin throw was a quite excellent 42.50 metres - eight more metres and it's a club record! Paul's 5000 metres was actually 17:42 which I think was a pb. Other pb's included Johnathan's 100 and 200 metres and Ross Cannon's 200 metres and his 400 was his second best ever.

Men's League
It was another good day for the Men's Track and Field team at Meadowbank on Sunday. Not all event results are to hand but those that I have seen are encouraging. In the sprints, Johnathan Farrell had two pb's (11.2 for second in the hundred and 22.88 for third in the 200. Unfortunately the winds were very strong however places and times were good. Anton Russell made his summer debut with 11.9 for the B 100 metres and cleared a creditable 1.55 in the high jump. Andrew Cusick ran 12.66 for the guest 100 metres and leapt out to 10.78 metres in the triple jump. Ross Cannon ran 23.75 for third in the 200 metres and was third in the 400 metres in 51.82. Ryan Nelson ran in the 1500 in 4:58 and Paul Carroll did his usual excellent job in the 5000 metres - if his time really was under 18 minutes then it might well be another pb. Back in the field, Anthony Jones threw the javelin just under 40 metres for the best club throw for a couple of seasons. The 4 x 100 relay team of Johnathan Farrell, Anton Russell, Andrew Cusick and Ross Cannon was fourth in 47.01 and then Ross was in action immediately afterwards in the 4 x 400 metres relay where the team was again fourth in 3:47. The team was Ross Cannon, Johnathan Farrell, David Brown and Ryan Nelson. I have clearly missed some results but they will be on the results age as soon as Donald gets them But well done to all who went to Edinburgh and thanks to Donald for looking after the team: the athletes might think their job is hard but in many ways the manager's job is harder! Well done Donald.

Melantee
Prasad travelled as expected to Fort William today to contest the Melantee Hill Race. Detailed results will appear in due course but the story of the race is that our man held on to the field on the longish run in and took the lead on the hill. He actually walked bits of the hill, maintaining his lead and conserving himself a but for what he calls the 'mental steep descent'. He was 25 second up at the summit and about 50 seconds in front at the finish from Al Anthony and Brian Marshall.
The Melantee, the Half Ben and the Cow Hill Race were always well supported by the club and it's good to see a club member winning this one.

Jedburgh
Johnathan is still doing the stuff and progressing with every meet. On Wednesday he was at Grangemouth and ran in two 100 metres races and was third in both in 11.52 seconds and 11.40 which was his best domestic run this season. He did 11.36 in Gothenburg in response to the challenge of the unknown but the 11.40 is an indicator of better to come. Then on Saturday he went to Jedburgh for the Games there and although he was handicapped out of it in the Heats of the 110 metres, he ran in the invitation 100 where he was second defeating the likes of Craig Fleming and Greg Turnbull. This was a very good run and if he can reproduce it on a tartan track it is worth faster than 11.4 and maybe down as quick as 11.0 seconds. Good on yer, Johnathan!!!

A wee quiz
I went on a bit the other day about how club traditions are not passed down from generation to generation as they should be. In an effort to see how much you know about your club, here's ten questions, no prizes, just for interest. As in the 'Weakest Link' the easy ones come first.
1. Who are the Club President, Secretary and Treasurer?
2. Who is the club cross country champion?
3. Who is the club sprints champion?
4. Who is the club field events champion?
5. When was the club founded? ie What year?
6. Do you know what month and day?
7. Where did the club train in its early days?
8. Who was the Scottish 100 yards champion who became manager of Celtic FC?
9. Who donated the Hannah Cup to the club?
10. Who was the Clydesdale Harrier who won the Scottish Senior Men's Cross Country Championship in 2003?
11. Who were in the team when Clydesdale Harriers won the West District Cross Country Relays in 1995?
12. Where did the club train before moving to The Antonine?
